A lot goes into the proper publication of children’s books. There’s the obvious costs of hardware and software (I use a Gaomon drawing tablet and Illustrator), but then there’s subscription costs for Microsoft Words and Adobe Creative Cloud), but there’s also the editing and (on occasion) freelance illustration costs. There’s cover design fees and traveling expenses. There’s marketing and advertising and domain names, then both website construction and maintenance, to varying degrees. And, of course, there are various other unexpected costs such as book and merchandise proofs for when I’m doing product testing. Simply put, when done right, it’s not cheap. But IF done wrong, I run the risk of turning kids off of reading, and that’s not a risk I like to take.
