To say I thoroughly enjoyed this gem of a book is an understatement. The story, which starts with a little girl telling the reader, “I’m cute, but I am so much more,” is well-written and does a wonderful job conveying an honest and empowering message to kids. Even the way the words (the text of the story) are added to the illustrations is well done. They flow with the pages in such a vibrant way that they become part of the art without getting lost in it.
And as for the illustrations… My-oh-my, did I love the illustrations. They’re fresh and unique and are, to be frank, simply amazing. Take the image above, for example. It shows the silhouettes of people walking the wintry city streets as a bundled up young girl gazes at the beautiful graffiti on the brick facade of a local bookstore. Look closer at the details now. Look at the whiffs of snow blowing and the names on both the street sign and the store front. A quick Google search will reveal one is a nice nod to the publisher, and it’s these small details that make each subsequent page rich with love and care.
Because of my enjoyment of this book (I read it to my 3 younger kids just today for nap-time), I wanted to share it with all of you and to say, Jessica, Simon, wonderful job. Keep it up and keep promoting reading to today’s youth!
